Goal: The student can explain the different UN sustainable development goals.

Welcome to the first week of this e-learning. We will start off by focusing on the UN Sustainable Development Goals, which are a universal call for action to promote prosperity while protecting the planet. These 17 Goals were adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which sets out a plan to reach the Goals within 15 years. They recognize that ending poverty must go hand-in-hand with strategies that build economic growth and address a range of social needs including education, health, social protection, and job opportunities, while tackling climate change and environmental protection.

Goal number 13 calls for urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. But as you will see, all of the other goals influence climate change – and vice versa. Little progress on climate action can be made without accelerating the achievement of Goal 7 on affordable and clean energy, for instance, or Goal 12 on responsible consumption and production. Climate solutions can support the goals such as through a just transition to renewable energy centred on providing decent work, the focus of Goal 8, or through developing resilient infrastructure under Goal 9.

 This week’s work:

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 global goals established by the United Nations (UN) in 2015. They are designed to address a wide range of global challenges and guide international efforts towards a more sustainable and equitable future by the year 2030. The SDGs cover various aspects of economic, social, and environmental development, aiming to eradicate poverty, ensure inclusive and quality education, promote gender equality, and address climate change, among other objectives.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) plays a crucial role in supporting the implementation of these goals. The UNDP is a UN agency that works to eradicate poverty, reduce inequalities, and build resilient and sustainable societies. It provides technical assistance, policy advice, and financial support to countries around the world, helping them achieve the SDGs and improve the well-being of their populations.

In summary, the Sustainable Development Goals represent a global agenda for a more sustainable and inclusive future, while the United Nations Development Programme actively supports countries in their efforts to achieve these goals.

Be sure to understand what is shown, said and written.

 Knowledge check:

  • Please categorize the first 16 UN-SDGs into 3 dimensions
  • After that, explain how these SDGs interact within each dimension.
  • Finally, please argue whether or not there is an interaction between these 3 dimensions.

This picture will help you in finding some of the answers.
